And this is the part that we repeated ad infinitum: If “Hardcore’ and “Brothers on My Jock” were firewood, “Headbanger” turned that wood into a straight up and down bonfire. EPMD was good at those…remember “Rampage” with L ripping people out the frame? But “Headbanger” saw the return of K-Solo who had just released his second album, Time’s Up, and the Redman verse that had us fiending for his album. “Headbanger…” yeah, that’s a good posse cut. The fire would be stoked on EPMD’s next album, Business Never Personal (EPMD’s best album, in my opinion). No “Knick Knack Patty Wack” calling card but it was firewood. The next song, however, “Brothers on My Jock” made me say…ok, this Redman guy is cool. So back to Business as Usual, first song with a guest, “Hardcore,” never liked the beat, didn’t pay it much attention. Nonetheless, based on K-Solo and K-Solo alone, the next time we heard a guest feature on an EPMD record, we were sure that whoever it was, their album would be as good as gold. The highly underpromoted Tell the World My Name ( Atlantic really dropped the ball). Me and my brothers prayed to the rap gods that K-Solo would release an album in our lifetime. The guest rapper I’m talking about, of course, is K-Solo. With one of the illest flows up until that moment and since, this guest rapper then tears into his spelling flow. He let’s you know straight away that his “style’s aggressive like a pitbull terrior.” And it is. On the 1972 Joe Cocker sample that was later made famous by Tupac’s loving up on California track, Erick Sermon and PMD set up their special guest who all out bodies the track. Back to my Senior year in High School, and EPMD’s sophomore album, Unfinished Business, side two, tenth track, “Knick Knack Patty Wack.” But to paint an even more clear picture, we have to go back even further.
